Mirfield Show will be back again in August 2017 bringing entertainment, and local crafts and produce to over 12,000 visitors from across Yorkshire.
Last year Mirfield Show was delighted to be awarded Huddersfield Examiners’ People’s Choice Award last year for best outdoor event. This award would not have been possible without all the committee members who volunteer each year to make the show happen. You too could be part of this team for 2017!
Meet the team…
The committee is headed up by Karen who has been Chairperson for 9 years and has been involved in the show since it returned in 1998. Karen comments; “The committee is a bit like a big family. Everyone works together to do their bit to make sure the show happens. We work hard but play hard. The end of year party is always a highlight to get together to celebrate a successful show but also reflect on how we can make it even better next year.”
One of the younger members of the team is Joseph who joined the marketing committee in 2013. Joseph is at Sixth Form currently studying for his A-Levels. Joseph designs the marketing materials for the show and through this has gained valuable experience to support his university application and future career aspirations. Joseph comments on why he joined the committee; “One of the main reasons I joined was to do with my Duke of Edinburgh Award I was completing at the time. However, I then got to know the committee and how much of a close knit but welcoming almost family like group it is. I enjoy being part of a team which is purely focused on the community and putting on a great show every year. Being part of the marketing team I have met many supporters but had the opportunity to mix with other subcommittees; that is something I love, the fact you are constantly working with each other to support each other within the committee. Of course things can get hectic from time to time but I wouldn’t change it, that’s why we do it!”
The domestic and competitions tent is always popular on show day with visitors flocking to the tent to see who has won the Mirfield Showstopper Bake, best flower arrangement in a teacup or the best carrots! Louise champions the competitions and classes committee ensuring there are always new and exciting competitions each year. Louise comments: “I got the ‘show bug’ after once entering my Maris Piper potatoes in the flower and vegetable novice class and winning first prize! I then became a volunteer and quickly realised that I wanted to be a part of this great team of people within the organising committee.@
These are just a handful of people who help to make Mirfield Show a success. The committee comprises of over 40 volunteers from all walks of life, with a wide range of skills and experience ageing from 14 to 60+. Everyone is welcome!
If you would like to find out more about joining the committee you can attend our AGM at 7.30pm on 13th February at The Old Colonial on Dunbottle Lane or contact us via the website or Facebook.
