2011: A Record Breaking Year

BY MIRFIELD REPORTER
Published on Friday 26 August 2011

MIRFIELD Show boasted another record turnout as 14,000 people passed through the gates on Sunday. The sun shone for what is firmly established as the biggest summer event in Mirfield’s calendar, which this year had more stalls and exhibitions than ever.
Crowds flocked to see helicopters land and llamas put through an obstacle course, courtesy of the Black Rock Llama Agility Display Team. There were also animal, vegetable and craft classes, dancers and bands.
The event was opened by Mirfield ambassador Lt Col David Eastman MBE, who spoke about his time serving in Afghanistan and said it was an honour to open the show.
He said: “I was really surprised at the number of people that turned up. The whole idea of the community getting together is just fantastic. “The thing that struck me was the level of support for the military. I was stopped by so many people throughout the day who asked me about my experiences and said positive things in support of our soldiers.”
It was a successful day for the Mayor of Mirfield Coun Pat Sutcliffe, who raised £1,400 on her stall. The donations were matched by Barclays bank in Mirfield. Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Simon Reevell also had a stall. He said: “The organisers were very sensible in booking good weather and by keeping the admission prices low to encourage people to come, so I’m a big fan.”
Richard Hartley, publicity officer for Mirfield Show, said: “It makes it all worthwhile when so many people turn up. I’m so pleased that the people and the attractions came out to support us.”
Show chairman Karen Bullivant said: “We have had an absolutely brilliant day. We were very pleased with all our attractions, the weather was just perfect and the huge crowd of people who came seemed to be really enjoying themselves. It was a great family day out, which is what we hoped to achieve. A fitting result for a lot of hard work over the year by our dedicated committee.”

Showground Improvements

With only two weeks to go, it is time to start preparing entries for Mirfield Show 2011, to be held at the Huddersfield Road Showground on Sunday 21st August.
COMPETITIONS
In the main marquee we have the Best in Show classes, with forty-two different Flower and Vegetable Classes, nineteen Children’s Classes (including Pre-School, 5 to 10s and 11 to 16s), fifteen new Egg Classes and numerous Rabbit Classes for both professionals and pets. Again, there are twenty-three Adult Classes (including baking and handicrafts), plus three major trophies and cash prizes in memory of Betty Taylor for the Best Scone, the Men Only Class, and for the Most Domestic Show Points.
In the rings we have seven different Horse and Pony Show Classes, ten different Dog Show Classes, the Mirfield Show Tug-of-War Trophy and our have-a-go Rabbit Jumping Competition.
We also have a host of fun competitions that you can take part in with medals and prizes for winners. This year we have the Fancy Dress Competition, the All-Comers Games, the Junior Tug-of War, the Adult Bushtucker, the Children’s Banana Eating, the Baby Show, the Children’s Races and the Build-a-Scarecrow Competition.
A full list of all schedules and entry forms can be picked up from Ramsden’s Butchers, or can be downloaded from our website www.mirfieldshow.com – along with details of the classes and competitions.
TICKETS & PROGRAMMES ON SALE
Entrance is by ticket this year - and advance tickets are now available from Ramsden's Butchers and from outside Mirfield Co-op for £2.50 on Friday 12th. Saturday 13th, Friday 19th and Saturday 20th August - not only will you get a discount with the Advance Tickets but will allow you to jump the queue to the new Advance Ticket entrance. Children will continue to enjoy the show for free. This year the programme has been extended with even more pages of events, attractions, classes, maps, competitions, photos, supporters and more. It will be sold for £1 by The Friends of Castle Hall School who will receive a donation for everyone sold throughout the day. It will also be available in advance from Ramsden's Butchers and the Co
PARKING
As Mirfield Show has continued to grow, it was decided to investigate off-field parking – and this year Castle Hall School will be running a car park in their grounds, with a shuttle bus organised to transport visitors to the main entrance. Hopefully this will make parking easier, mean everyone can get to the gates quicker and stop the on-street parking which has happened in previous years. We encourage everyone to walk, or park their vehicle at Castle Hall School.
SHOWGROUND IMPROVEMENTS
Last year was an amazing year with ten thousand people visiting the show, strengthening its financial future. It costs almost £20,000 to stage the show each year, and any money left-over is put into more free attractions and the rainy day fund – something much needed in our recent summers in Mirfield.
However this year the volunteer committee decided to invest some money into improving the showground all year round for the good of the people of Mirfield. Last Autumn we planted over two thousand daffodil bulbs around the banks of trees which gave a splash of colour this springtime. This Summer we opened the new pedestrian gate which will give everyone better access to the showground all year round – in attendance was Show President Chris Ramsden with Mark Northing and Paul Whitehead from Crossley Gate & Railings, Nigel Smith from Darren Smith Homes and Martin Ibberson from the Show Committee.

Attractions

This week Mirfield Show officially announced its line-up for Sunday 21st August with the emphasis on something new that you are unlikely to have seen anywhere around locally before.
Show chair, Karen Bullivant, said “Last year was great success with visitors coming from all across the region – and so this year we have been able to organise some amazing new attractions, yet keep it a great value family day out – and it is still possible for every child to come to Mirfield Show and it cost them absolutely nothing. It remains free entrance for children, they can they can bring along their own refreshments, they can see a wide range of exciting attractions across the showground, and they can get involved with archery, play on the fun beach, visit the animal displays, watch the puppet shows, climb the climbing wall, or join in the welly wanging – all for free.”
Mirfield Show welcomes, for the first time, the Air Tattoo Helicopter Display Team, who will be dropping in to entertain the crowds with their amazing display. Formed in 1999 to bring together the Royal Navy, Army and Air Force under one command, it operates 239 aircraft including the Sea King, Lynx, Chinook, Puma, Merlin, Apache, Gazelle and Bell 212 helicopters – one of which will be used on the day. This will be followed by a display in the main ring by the team themselves.
Also brand new for this year is the Black Rock Llama Display Team – a truly unique, exciting, action packed display which you are unlikely to have ever seen before. Watch an action packed, fun, crowd entertaining display which gives an insight into the fascinating world of Llamas. You will be thrilled as the elegant llamas, each with their own racing colours negotiate an obstacle course including jumps, slalom pole, limbo poles and even tunnels, and each llama will be assisted by a member of the crowd in their bid to become supreme llama agility champion – so expect lots of audience participation.
There will also be even more Competitions & Classes to see or get involved with at Mirfield Show this year - whether it is the Horse or Dog Shows, the Flower, Vegetable, Childrens, Domestic or Rabbit Classes, the Children’s Races or Welly Wanging, the Scarecrow or Colouring Competitions, the Children's Fancy Dress, the Bushtucker or Banana Eating Challenges, the Baby Show or the very popular Rabbit Jumping trials.
Other attractions Confirmed for Sunday 21st August also include; Sheep Shearing, the ATC Band, Dancers, the award winning Knottingley Silver Band, the Racing-Bug, Donkey Rides, Bouncy Slides, Donkeys, Jersey Calves, Sheep, Dry Stone Walling, Martial Arts, Craft Stalls, Trade Stalls, a Food Court, a Cocktail Bar, and a Beer Tent, plus many more.
This year there is also an addition to the ever-popular Mirfield Agricultural Show Tug of War Trophy - a junior competition for under 16s. Last year Bankfield Brewery from Sheffield beat the Misfits - and this year we are looking for more challengers – young and old - to get teams together and dislodge the champions from their mantle.
Don't forget that Friday 22nd July is the closing date for entries for this year’s Mirfield Show Creative Writing Competition as sponsored by Charlottes Jersey Ice Cream Ltd. Multiple prizes, and free to enter.
For full details and schedules of all the activities and competitions, or if you are interested in a sponsorship packages, or if you or your organisation can help at some point on the weekend, visit our regularly updated website at www.mirfieldshow.com or email info@mirfieldshow.com.

Both contribute heavily towards the £20,000 required to stage the show each year and keep the costs free for children. The show was blessed with exceptional weather last year that helped bring the crowds out, but this is never guaranteed and the future of the show depends heavily on the support received from local organisations, societies and businesses.

WANT TO PLACE AND ADVERT IN THE PROGRAMME ?

Calling all new and previous programme advertisers - we have started work on the 2011 programme and as usual advert slots will fill up fast.
The show continues to be a very popular event in the Yorkshire calendar, and last year saw several thousand visitors pass through the gates - so this is an ideal way to not just support the show, but to get your business known to many people across Mirfield and surrounding areas. You can choose from either a full or half page advert.
In addition to your advert appearing in the programme, in advance of the show, you will be sent a copy of the programme, posters showing your support for the show, plus a guest badge and complimentary tickets which will allow you free of charge entry on show day.
The programme also includes key show day information, such as field plan, attractions, events and schedules for horses, dogs, rabbits, flower, vegetable, children's and domestic.
As last year, despite rising costs, we have not passed any increases on for another year. A Full Page advert remains £80, a Half Page remains £40, a Quarter Page advert (for existing advertisers only) remains £20. But there will also be the usual £10 additional charge for any amends made to an advert used last year to cover the increasing cost of reworks.
Closing date for return of forms is May 31st - but adverts will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so is usually full before this date.

Committee Chair, Karen Bullivant, said “Last year the public came out in their thousands to support their local show and enjoyed a wide range of competitions and attractions including the Royal Artillery Parachute Team and the Kangaroo Gymnastics Display Team. Outdoor charity and trade stands are an important part of Mirfield Show and are a great opportunity for local businesses and charities to raise their profile and funds. However, this year the allocation policy has had to change due to the last two years being heavily over subscribed with only a limited space available. So, if you are considering an outdoor trade or charity stall at this year’s show, all applications must be submitted before Friday March 25th with the final allocations based on innovative stalls, local businesses and charities, and what the applicant will add to the show experience. To support local businesses, any applicant with a WF14 postcode will also be eligible for a 25% discount. Craft stalls will continue to be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. For full details please visit the website or email stalls-and-attractions@mirfieldshow.com.Support
Many people don't realise that Mirfield Show is organised by a team of local volunteers for the benefit of Mirfield and its inhabitants on a not-for-profit basis – and to be able to continue to do this, the team are always on the look out for new members and day-volunteers. If you are able to help out, or wish to advertise in the show programme, or are interested in one of the sponsorship packages, e-mail info@mirfieldshow.com or visit www.mirfieldshow.com for more details.

Book a Stall ?

Whether you wish to book a Trade Stall, Craft Stall, Food Stall or Charity Stall - we have options across the showground for everyone...

Trade and Charity Stalls
Charity and trade stands are an important and popular part of Mirfield Family Agricultural Show. They are based outside at the bottom of the showground and are one of the first things that greets visitors as they enter show.
The number of charity and trade stands has grown over the years with over fifty stalls covering various wares from talented artists to photographers, from jewellers to gift makers, from plant growers to book sellers. We also have a wide selection of animal based trade stands, including saddleries, vets, pet shops, animal care and animal charities.
We are delighted to have the support of many local and national businesses, many returning year after year – and it is a great opportunity for charities to raise funds for their causes. The field trade stalls have become very popular, with the last two years being heavily oversubscribed and we would love to accommodate all those who apply, but as you know the space is limited. So this year we have had to change our allocation policy.
All applications must be submitted before 25 March 2011 with details of exactly what is planned on the stall - and please do not send any money with your application.
Offers will be made soon after to successful applicants, with the final decision based on innovative stalls, local businesses and charities, and what the applicant will add to the show experience. All applicants will receive a reply.
We apologise in advance as we know that there will be a lot of disappointed applicants. However, there is some good news. We have reduced our price by 25% for field and craft stall applicants with a WF14 postcode and in addition we have reduced the price of a registered charity stall from £30 last year to £20.
Pitches are 5m x 5m and as a guide, each pitch will accommodate a 3 x 3m gazebo, plus one car - no other vehicles are allowed on the showground.
To book a trade or charity stall please see the attached Field Stalls Terms and Conditions and complete the attached Field Stall Booking Form.
For more details e-mail stalls-and-attractions@mirfieldshow.com.

Craft 'Marquee' Stalls
The number of craft stalls has also grown over the years with over forty stalls covering various crafts from, baking to sweets, from flowers to homewares, from aromatherapy to jewellery, from confectionary to cheese.
The stalls are located in the craft marquee and include one table and two chairs and cost £40. Each stall is allowed one car that must be parked in the showground car park, however there will be access from the rear of the marquee to set up and replenish stalls.
However, as above, we have reduced our price by 25% for craft stall applicants with a WF14 postcode.
To book a craft stall please see the attached Craft Stalls Terms and Conditions and complete the attached Craft Stall Booking Form.
Bookings for indoor craft stalls begins in January each year for the August show and stalls are usually fully booked by June. For more details e-mail stalls-and-attractions@mirfieldshow.com.

Food and Catering Stalls
Food Stalls can book pitches of about 7.5 x 5m and are located in the food court, around the seating area towards the top half of the showground. As a guide, their is enough room for one catering trailer and seating in front. All catering vans are expected to unhook, and move their vehicles to the Showground car park - no other vehicles are allowed on the showground.
Enquiries for food and catering stalls begins in January each year for the August show and bookings are made by tender - based on food type, quality, prices, as well as bid price - and the closing date is usually in April. Successful applicatants receive a two year offer, and for that reason, the catering stalls are fully booked for 2011. For more details or register an interest for 2012 e-mail stalls-and-attractions@mirfieldshow.com.

More Information
Applications for stalls should be made with the Stalls Booking Form to the Stalls Manager. For more information, terms and conditions – please download the Stalls Terms and Conditions. Please also be aware that there is no water or electricity on site, and no tables/chairs (except craft stalls) or shelters are provided.

PLEASE NOTE ALL OUTDOOR TRADE STALLS & FOOD CONCESSIONS ARE NOW ALLOCATED FOR 2011. HOWEVER SOME CRAFT STALLS STILL REMAIN.

Show Stopping Year

It's been another record year for Mirfield Show - with up to 12,000 people flocking through the gates during Sunday's event.
Organiser Richard Hartley said Sunday's glorious weather brought the crowds out to this year's event, breaking last year's biggest-ever attendance record of 10,000.
He said the most in the showground at one time was thought to be about 6,000 people - but through ticket sales the committee thought 12,000 had enjoyed the day's festivities, including a parachute jump by the Royal Artillery Parachute Team, who leapt from a plane to land in the grounds.
He said: "I always think that Mirfield Show is about having things that you don't find at every other village show. I can't remember the last time I saw parachutists at a local show.
"The committee goes through a lot of stress and strain on the Sunday but afterwards when everyone is happy and talking about what a good time they've had makes it all worth it. After the show we all sat down and said, 'it's been a good year'."
Mr Hartley said two years ago stalls were still available in June, but this year all the stalls were full by the start of April with a waiting list just as long - and people were still ringing up to check for cancellations on the day of the show.
He said: "We really appreciate the business that comes from further afield, but it's great when you see local businesses coming and having a good day.
"The list of stalls and attractions is so long and I think it's going to be the same next year. I think within three to four months we will be full.
"For a number of years the attendance figures were all quite steady at 4,000 to 5,000, but the committee has grown with new members bringing different ideas.
"We have got some really good members who have been here for years, and the new people that came in earlier this year have brought new life and new ideas. It's great to have more people on board - the more people we have, the more we can do."
And planning for next year's show has already started. Mr Hartley added: "It's a non-stop job - but you wouldn't do it if you didn't love it."

Chairmans Message

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN
“I would like to say a big thank you to all involved in this year’s show on Sunday. We had a bumper crowd, fantastic attractions and, best of all, brilliant weather.
I especially want to thank all the hardworking committee members who spend all year in preparation of the event, and then all weekend making it happen. We couldn’t do it without our volunteers either, a big thank you to them.
From a financial point of view, thank you to all our sponsors for enabling us to provide the high quality attractions we had.
And lastly for the families who came to the show and made it the successful community event it was, a massive thank you. See you all next year.”

Guest Opener
This year we are please to announce that Andy Booth – ex-player and ambassador for Huddersfield Town – will be formally opening the show at 12pm in the main ring.
Kangaroo Gymnastics Display Team
Brand new for this year is the Kangaroo Gymnastics Display Team who have appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, and will perform two displays from 1.30pm in the main ring. This will include multiple somersaults over a car and the final ‘Big Move’ which is the longest, highest and most spectacular Vaulting move performed possibly anywhere in the world. The second display is based on a classic Victorian theme, and includes a ‘Gentleman’, two Cricketers, a Robber and a Policeman, who are all involved eventually in a classic chase.

A competition to find a town crier to represent Mirfield takes place at the show – and all those wishing to be considered for the post will be required to present themselves at the show and demonstrate why they should be the town's new town crier by taking their turn in the main arena and calling out an announcement. Principal judge will be Dewsbury's awarding-winning Town Crier, Laurie Gilbert. A decibel recorder will also be used and the audience will be asked to signify their approval of the respective candidates. The winner will be provided with a full outfit including a tricorn hat and a bell by the Saville Arms Pub, and at Christmas will be presented with a pin of ale - about 35 pints - and a pin of pickled onions from the Old Colonial Club, and a turkey from Ramsden's Butchers. What’s On - Classes

This week Mirfield Show officially announced its line up for Sunday 22nd August with the emphasis on something new for everyone, plus making it even greater value by increasing the number of low-price and free attractions.

Also new this year, the Royal Artillery Parachute Display Team will be dropping in to wow the crowds with their amazing display. Gnr Rebecca Bull – the display co-ordinator - said: “There will be four or five serving soldiers parachuting into the arena.
Great Yorkshire Show Opens

GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW OPENS Tuesday 13th July to Thursday 15th July
The Great Yorkshire Show opened at the Showground in Harrogate today (July 13th) with large crowds expected from across the region and the country. As usual the rich, the famous, the public and royalty will mix together making the Great Yorkshire Show one of the most prestigious agricultural shows in England. There will be over 8,000 animals exhibiting in numerous classes, top class show jumping, and hundreds of trade stands and craft stalls with something for everyone in the family. The unfortunate closure of other large agricultural shows across England such as the The Royal Show and the Royal Lancashire Show have increased the number of classes and exhibits - but this should not take away from the great work the organisers do to build such a great event and day out.Guide To The Great Yorkshire ShowShow programmes are an invaluable purchase on the day of the show as they contain full event listings and programme, a guide to what's on and the all important show map.Showground Opening Times. The Showground is open between 7.30am and 7.30pm daily (no admission after 5pm), apart from Thursday 15th July when the show will shut at 6.30pm.For full details visit the Great Yorkshire show website. A Brief History of the Great Yorkshire ShowThe Great Yorkshire Show was born in October 1837 when a group of leading agriculturalists, led by the third Earl Spencer, met at the Black Swan Hotel in Coney Street, York to discuss the future of the farming industry*.The result was the decision to form an organisation - the Yorkshire Agricultural Society - whose aims were to improve and develop agriculture and hold an annual show of excellence. Thus the wheels were set in motion and the first Yorkshire Show was held in Fulford, York, in 1838. Attendance figures were not recorded until 1842 when the Show was held in York. The figure was 6,044. In the early years, in common with other shows, the Yorkshire was peripatetic. It was held in all the main centres of population - no fewer than 30 towns in the three ridings. Then in 1950 the innovative decision was taken to build a permanent showground. The Harrogate site was purchased and its imaginative layout and excellent facilities quickly resulted in it becoming a role model for others. In 1992 the decision was made to remain on the Harrogate site and an ambitious £10m re-development programme was embarked upon. Since then the Showground's prestigious conference and events venue, the Yorkshire Events Centre and Pavilions of Harrogate have gone from strength to strength. In addition the number of events staged on the Showground year round has increased dramatically - it is now busy 12 months of the year. British Home Stores now stands on the site of the original Black Swan Hotel in York but a plaque on the wall outside records the fact that the Society was formed at the Hotel. For full article visit the Great Yorkshire Show website

Rabbit Jumping

RABBIT JUMPING COMING TO MIRFIELD SHOW 2010.
Rabbit Jumping (or Hopping) is becoming more and more popular here in the UK following the first competition last year at Honley Show - and this year competitions will be held at Mirfield Family Agricultural Show from 2pm.
It is fun for rabbit and owner, and even a great way to keep you both fit, but it needs more people to get involved.
Getting started is simple... and as the sport in the UK is less than a year old, everybody is a beginner, and there is no need to fear that your rabbit wont jump. It’s part of the fun.
On a straight course there would probably be eight to twelve jumps with the first class jumping up to 9cms high, the medium jumps up to 18cm high and the difficult class up to 28cms high.
If you want to practice in advance, making your own jumps isn’t difficult. Why not go to the local timber merchant and ask if you can look through their waste timber skip for wood to make rabbit jumps - they are often so intrigued that they will be very helpful. Click here to see some examples of Rabbit Jumps.

Rabbit Jumping Records
The world record for the highest jump is 99.5 cms !
The world record for the longest jump is 3 metres !

Training for Rabbit Jumping
You don't have to train your rabbit to join in - but if you want to try visit the Rabbit Jumping UK website. All breeds can compete in Rabbit Jumping but some tend to be better than others - but all rabbits have different personalities so it will vary. A rabbit that likes to sit on your knee and relax is probably going to be unwilling to jump. Active rabbits that love to run round are a lot more likely to jump. Even if your rabbit is lazy, don't give up, as they can still learn.

Rabbit Jumping at Mirfield Show
If you want to join in the fun, bring your rabbits down to Mirfield Showground - wearing a harness and lead - where competitions will start from 2pm. Even if you don't want to enter, why not bring your rabbit down to give it a go.
For details of entering, see visist the attached schedule.

Tribute to Betty Taylor

Preparations are well under way for Mirfield Show which this year will be held on Sunday 22nd August 2010 at Mirfield Showground – and as a tribute to one of its founders – will be dedicated in whole to the memory of Betty Taylor who passed away earlier in March.
Betty Taylor had been a member since it’s re-creation in 1995 and spent many years as chair of the committee – determined to deliver a family day out that the people of Mirfield could be proud of, whilst appreciating its traditional agricultural heritage.
She was saddened by the concerns about Mirfield Show's future and was very disappointed that this could be the last year unless more people came forward to carry the show forward. As reported, her lasting thought was that 'the show must go’, and the people of Mirfield and surrounding areas came out in forced to make sure it does.
Karen Bullivant said: “Betty would have been proud how much the people of Mirfield cared about Mirfield Show, and how they came forward to make sure the show continued to be a key part of the local calendar. And this year, we will be continuing what Betty strived for - we will be hosting many free field and ring attractions, and keeping the admission for children free.”
Attractions planned so far include two main ring attractions (to be announced), Mirfield Town Crier Finals, climbing wall, bouncy slides, ATC display, pony rides, farm animals, puppet shows, craft and trade stalls, food court, martial arts, beach – as well as the usual horse and pony show, fun dog show, flower, vegetable, domestic, rabbit, cavy and children’s classes.

Calling all new and previous programme advertisers - we have started work on the 2010 programme and as usual advert slots will fill up fast.
The show continues to be a very popular event in the Yorkshire calendar, and last year saw several thousand visitors pass through the gates - so this is an ideal way to not just support the show, but to get your business known to many people across Mirfield and surrounding areas. In addition to your advert appearing in the programme, in advance of the show, you will be sent a copy of the programme, posters showing your support for the show, plus a guest badge and two complimentary tickets which will allow you free of charge entry on show day.

Betty Taylor

A 'TRUE Mirfield lass' who was one of the founders of Mirfield Show has died. Betty Taylor, 71, who resurrected the show with others 15 years ago, passed away last week.
She was born in Calder Road in Lower Hopton in 1938, and was confirmed at St Paul's Church, Eastthorpe, the church she attended all her life.
She married late husband Brian on October 22, 1960, at the church, and the couple had two children, Julie in 1963 and Robert in 1971. They family lived together on the newly built West Royd estate.
A talented chef, Betty worked as a cook, a domestic science teacher, and ran her own shop, West Riding Fine Foods.
Daughter Julie Dedman said: "Mum was a true Mirfield lass, a doer, and a jolly good baker. Home was always a busy place with people coming and going and all sorts of things happening. Mum and dad had a busy, productive life, finding themselves at the heart of everything that went on in their community.
"West Riding Fine Foods quickly became a success and mum's fine baking meant that she couldn't make it fast enough. You had to get there early to not miss out on the almond slices."
Betty sold the business and retired, but she continued to cater for Julie's business.
Julie said: "Mum was devastated at the loss of my dad 18 years ago, and she became involved in fundraising for the British Heart Foundation. She also became more involved in things in the town, especially Mirfield Show, and for a number of years she was chairwoman of the committee. She was a judge at local shows and did numerous cookery demonstrations.
"She and dad were founder members of Mirfield Young Conservatives, and mum served as Mayor of Mirfield.
"She had a blood disorder which developed into leukaemia, which she very bravely fought for seven years.
"Later in life she started to play bridge, and she last played five weeks ago despite her failing health.
"She was saddened to read in the Reporter of the concerns about Mirfield Show's future. She would be very disappointed to hear the show had to stop and it was her lasting thought that 'the show must go on'. Her wish is to have a cup at the Mirfield Show for domestic classes in her memory."
Paying tribute to Betty at Tuesday's Mirfield Town Council meeting, Coun Keith Sibbald said: "Betty was a stalwart, not only for the town council but for the community, voluntary organisations and Mirfield Show. She is a woman who will be very sadly missed."

Challenging Times Ahead...

Mirfield Family Agricultural Show will be held this year on Sunday 22nd August, but it is facing challenging times ahead unless new people come on board. Since it began the show has grown in size and draws in crowds from all across the county, becoming one of the most popular family agricultural shows in Yorkshire - however, now the few members remaining are finding it more and more difficult to put the show on."Last year was such a strong year, helped by the weather, but we're just missing the manpower" said Karen Bullivant, show chairman. "We are putting on more and more attractions and we are in danger of spreading ourselves too thinly. Also, we are getting older and can't do as much." she warned. "We're looking for new blood and younger people to get involved to continue to inject new life into the show and build for the years to come.""People are not as willing, or don’t have the time, to help voluntary causes as their parents or grandparents might have been, but Mirfield has a great community spirit, full of enterprising people who have fresh ideas and loads of energy.""I can assure people that we are not a boring and stuffy committee - we are a team that brings people together from different sections and interests, and it is a great place to meet a wide variety of people and be part of a key event in the Mirfield calendar."Because of this, we are holding a special meeting on Wednesday 10th March 2010 at 7.00pm at Old Bank Club, Mirfield to welcome potential new interested organisations and individuals.Nobody will be thrown in at the deep end (unless they wish), and there are roles to fit most peoples interests - so to get the most out of their skills, whilst doing something they enjoy. There are roles for everyone, from well-organised administrators, to programme designers, from event organisers to publicity generators, from stewarding the domestic, fruit and flower exhbits, to actual physical manpower - and much more.Anyone interested in finding out more should come along to the meeting or e-mail us at info@mirfieldshow.com.

Winner Announced...

There were over one hundred entries into this year's Mirfield Family Agricultural Show Photography Competition, and the standard was very high.
The brief was simple - simply come along on the day and take a photograph which captures any aspect of the show.
We had entries covering classes such as the Horses and Dogs, from family photos to photos of the main ring attractions - but ultimately what won the judges over was a photograph of the alpacas by Martin Lyons of Mirfield.
Martin wins an amazing photo shoot package with a framed print worth over £100, kindly donated by Xclusive Images of Osset and Source Print of Penistone.
Please see the photo section of the Mirfield Show website for a selection of the judges favourites.
