News added on 2011-05-23MORE CLASSES AND COMPETITIONS THAN EVER BEFORE...
This year’s Mirfield Agricultural Show may be on Sunday 21st August, but many of the show’s competitions kick off now - and with even more things to enter, there are more prizes to be one.
Firstly, you are invited to take part in the annual Mirfield Show Creative Writing Competition which is held in the run up to show day, with prizes for the most interesting short-stories and poems awarded on the day. This year, writers are invited to take part in one of four categories; Up to 10's - a story or poem connected with the countryside, gardens or nature (max 800 words); Up to 12's – a story or poem connected with sport, hobby or an interest (max 1000 words); Up to 14's – a story or poem on any theme connected with Mirfield (max 1500 words); and Open to All – a story or poem about a journey that begins or ends in Mirfield. There are also four additioanal Judge's Special Commendations awarded, plus this year a special award donated by the Bronte Society. The competition is free to enter but all entries must be received by Friday 22nd July, with the winners announced on 15th August 2011. All prizes are kindly donated by Charolottes Jersey Ice Cream Parlour. All the winning stories and poems, and a selection of others commended by the judge, will be included in a limited edition Mirfield Show Creative Writing Competition booklet, which will be available on show day. Full details, and the simple rules, can be obtained from the Mirfield Show website, Mirfield Library and Ramsden's Butchers, or by e-mailing writers.mirfieldshow@ntlworld.com or telephoning 01924 499902.
If you are looking for something to prove your strength, why not enter a team into the Mirfield Show Tug of War Competition and see if you can pull the reigning champions – Bradfield Brewery of Sheffield - out of the ring ? Heats and final are on the afternoon on showday, but interested entrants need to download an entry form from the website and register by Friday 13th August.
The Mirfield Show Build A Scarecrow Competition will return for its third year, with the judging taking place on the afternoon of showday, with prizes for first, second and third. If you, your family, your school class, your team, or your group of friends are interested in making a scarecrow then all you have to do is to complete the entry form on the Mirfield Show website (where you will find ideas and instructions on how to build a scarecrow) and submit it by Friday 13th August so we can reserve you a space.
The Mirfield Show Children's Colouring Competition will also be out shortly, so look out on the website, in the library and in Ramsden’s Butchers for the rules and colouring-in sheets. There will be different sections for boys, girls, younger and older – just colour in the relevant sheet and hand in back in by Thursday 19th August, or before 11am at the marquee on show day.
There will also be many turn up and join in competitions on the day – from childrens races, welly wanging, rabbit jumping, bushtucker trials, banana eating – and not forgetting the horse and pony show, fun dog show, flower, vegetable, childrens, domestic and rabbit classes. For full details, entry forms and rules, visit the Mirfield show website at www.mirfieldshow.com.
There is also a final reminder for potential advertisers in this year's programme, and announcement that we are now looking for potential sponsors for the events and attractions of 2011. Both contribute heavily towards the £20,000 required to stage the show each year and keep the costs free for children. The show was blessed with exceptional weather last year that helped bring the crowds out, but this is never guaranteed and the future of the show depends heavily on the support received from local organisations, societies and businesses.
